A new year has hit and it’s resolution making time. If your new year’s resolution involves making more friends and you live in New York, well you are in luck because The 20s Club is back. It’s your first date and you’re a bit nervous. Maybe you met this lucky someone online and this is your first in person encounter or perhaps it’s a friend and this is your first official step into new unchartered waters. You have enough to worry about with what to wear and what to order, here are some tips to make your night a bit more relaxing and fun.

Splitting The Bill
How to split the bill always becomes an issue on dates, even after the first date. For the most part, the guy is going to feel obligated to pay for the bill and it’s up to the girls as to what impression you want to make. Ladies, you have five choices 1) Offer to split the bill but let the guy pay for it if he objects. 2) Offer to split the bill and actually split the bill. 3) Let the guy pay for dinner or drinks and suggest you will treat for dessert or the next round of drinks. 4) Let the guy pay for the bill and don’t offer a thing. 5) You pay the whole bill. In the end, the choice is up to you ladies. If you see this first date turning into many more dates, then definitely offer to pay your part. If you plan on never seeing this fellow again, then you can let him pay for the bill if you want or you can at least offer. Just remember, if you do offer to split the bill the guy just might take you up on it and don’t be shocked – we are all just trying to afford living in New York City after all. 

For goodness sake, put away your phone and listen to your date talk. You can go back to texting your friends as soon as the date is over. If the evening really isn’t what you were expecting, excuse yourself to the restroom, text and call away to complain to friends, then go back to your date and be polite and respectful. If you’ve been talking to someone long enough to set up a date then you owe them the common courtesy of not texting for the course of a few hours of your evening. 

Dinner vs. Drinks
It’s your first date and you can’t decide if you should go out for dinner or for drinks. There are pros and cons to both of these routes and even other more creative options. 
Drink Pros: More casual than a formal dinner and a drink can help ease the nerves. 
Drink Cons: Your date might think you’re cheap by suggesting drinks over dinner and you don’t have a great next phase of the date besides more drinks. 
Dinner Pros: After impressing your date with your culinary selection, you can then suggest drinks if the evening is going well. 
Dinner Cons: Staring across from your date at a formal restaurant on a first encounter can be nerve-racking so restaurant selection is important. This can also be a pricey option for the first date.
Don’t limit yourself to dinner or drinks though, there are plenty of great first date activities such as a walk on the High Line, watching an improv show or even going to a museum. Activity dates take even more pressure off the conversation since the museum of show will give you both something to talk about.

First dates can be tough, but they can also be amazing. Getting to know someone for the first time is a really exciting experience. Good luck and hopefully date #2 is even better than the first!

New Yorkers love a good costume party and this month The 20s Club is hosting two! First, The 20s Club is partnering with The Festivist Productions, who specialize in themed parties, for a Royal Baby Shower themed party in honor of Prince William & Catherine Middleton's new baby. The 20s Club & Festivist Productions will be taking over The Churchill Tavern for an evening of seersuckers and floral prints. Later in the month The 20s Club will be attending Chelsea Clearview Cinema's midnight screening of Rocky Horror Picture Show. The wacky experience is even more fun when the audience dresses to impress as well. The upcoming 20s Club events aren't the only themed parties this summer in New York - with BBQs, concerts, pool parties and a jam packed social calendar this summer, you'll need to know the best way to find a costume that will make you stand out.

Channel your inner Mackelmore and go thrift shopping for an affordable outfit that no one else will have. Hitting your local Goodwill or Housing Works will be an easy way to find the right outfit. If you want more of a selection, check out different neighborhoods with a variety of thrift shops. East Village and Williamsburg are packed with thrift stores.  If you're in East Village, check No Relation Vintage and in Williamsburg try Beacon's Closet. These two stores are always a safe bet as they are overflowing with sequins, florals, metallic and any costume or accessory you could imagine. 

When thrifting for a costume, it's a good idea to research ideas online before hitting the stores to prevent an overwhelming shopping experience. If you're going to a 70s themed party and know you want to find bell bottoms, disco print, go-go boots and other funky items, you'll have an idea of what you are looking for when you're searching through racks of clothing. 

Costume Rental

An alternative to buying a costume is to rent one from a costume store. For a fraction of the cost of purchasing a costume you can show up to an event in a picture perfect outfit. Check out some of the best costume rental shops in NYC such as Creative Costume CompanyFrankie Steinz Costumes & Abracadabra. Renting a costume will most likely end up costing you more than a thrifted outfit, but if you’re looking to win a costume contest and make a statement, rental is a great way to go.


An even cheaper way of dressing for a costume party is to borrow from friends or family. In every friendship group there is always that guy or girl who has a costume box of random glasses and scarves he/she could never part with. Give your costume-enthusiast friend a call and see if there is anything you can borrow before you go out shopping. Be sure to treat these borrowed items carefully since they aren’t your own and always offer to give a treat in exchange for the loan.

Entertaining your friends can get pricey and as fun as it is to host a party and then pass out in your bed at the end of the night, the total cost can be very daunting. Summer is the pinnacle of parties and if you have some party ideas in mind, take a read with some tips to keep your budget low. 
  • You don't have to be a master chef or baker to feed your guests tasty food. Grab some cookies from Trader Joes, fresh fruit and maybe some cheese and crackers and your set.
  • Presentation is everything. Take a trip to TJ Maxx or Goodwill to stock up on affordable bowls and plates to display the snacks. Create your own three tiered cake stand by topping three plates and two mugs on top of each other. Stack on the treats for an easy and delicious snack table.

  • Substitute soda and tonic water with fruit juices and fresh cut fruit for fancy drink mix-ins that will wow your guests and make the alcohol last longer. Sipping out of straws is another way to pace drink consumption, so place a cup of straws next to the drinks.
  • In the invitation to your party politely as your friends to bring drinks to share. Really, you can't be held accountable for funding all your guests' drinking habits!

  • Well selected decorations are the perfect way to make your party stand out. Take cheap and typical party decorations such as streamers and balloons and do something out of the ordinary - like creating a photobooth out of streamers taped on a wall. Blow up balloons without helium and tape them around your apartment for funky and memorable decorations. 
  • Flowers always brighten up a room because they add a pop of color and a heavenly scent. Buy fresh flowers, arrange them in vases and strategically place them around your home for effortless decoration.

  • Music can set the tone to a party, so a good playlist is crucial. Sign up for Spotify Premium or download the free trial to create a great playlist with no commercials. Start the playlist a few days before the party and invite your friends to add music to the playlist through a shared Spotify playlist.
  • Get speakers to blast music so everyone at your party can hear, no matter how big or small your apartment is.

If I've learned a thing or two from the countless interviews I've been on, it's that an interview is as much about you interviewing the company as it is about the company interviewing you. On paper a company and a position may sound like a dream, but in actuality they may not. Just like with dating, you don't want to end up with someone that you like more than they like you, or the other way around. In dating and in finding a job, there needs to be mutual interest for a happy relationship to thrive. You want to be wanted and you deserve to work for someone who can't wait for you to start your first day. Until you find that happy fit, just remember, landing the right job isn't about nailing an interview or a picture perfect cover letter, it's about the right fit. Just like true love (not that I know yet, but from what I hear) once you find the dream job, you'll know because the good one and the right one isn't going to let you get away!

It's also important to remember that if you don't get a job it isn't because you're not intelligent, passionate and experienced (because you are), it's just because you aren't the best fit for that particular job. Also, even if you get an offer, as tempting as it may be to take the new job because it's there, if it's a poor fit then it is not going to be a lasting relationship. It's better to stick it out at your current job until you can transition into a new opportunity that you see yourself growing with. Whether you're at your first job out of college or already have a few years of experience under your belt, job transitions and interviewing are going to be a regular occurrence in your life and it's important to find that right fit. Going on interview after interview without getting a job offer can be discouraging, trust me I know. But your patience and perseverance will pay off.

First of all, I'm going to start off by saying that I'm still trying to incorporate exercise into my daily routine and that this is something I've been struggling with my entire life. You see, its quite tricky. When I vow that I will work out in the morning I quickly change my mind when my alarm wails an hour earlier than usual. After work I'd much prefer grabbing dinner and drinks with a friend or catching up on TV shows in the comfort of my bed than sweating on the elliptical. But as the summer approaches and my bikini body is far from ready, it's important now more than ever to make exercise a priority.

Here are 5 easy exercise tips:

1. Do you have stairs in your building? Then take the stairs. I happen to be on the 10th floor and as much as I hate it when my elevator is broken, walking up 10 flights of stairs is a great way to get your heart rate up. Sometimes in the mornings when I can't convince myself to go the gym, I create my own stairmaster and run up and down the stairs once or twice before getting ready for work. When you have the option to take the stairs in the subway, at work or at home - take the stairs. Just think of those extra calories you're burning.

2. Go on a walk to break up your work day. Sitting in front of your desk for 8 hours, or even longer, is not good for your health, posture or stress. Getting up every few hours to take a short stroll outside will get you burning some calories and will keep you calmer. If you're walking downstairs to grab a chocolate bar, this isn't going to do the trick. But taking a 10 or 20 minute brisk walk (and possibly buying a healthy snack, like an apple) is a great way to get you out of your desk chair and moving. Bring a work friend to vent and catch up.

3. Speaking of friends, get a gym buddy. Make a goal with a friend to work out together because that way when you try to talk yourself out of going to the gym, you won't only be letting yourself down but also your bud. Other people can be great motivation to hold you to your plan and prevent you from steering off course. You can also set rewards together, such as a shopping date or concert tickets, once you both reach a certain goal.

4. Find a fun alternative to working out on the treadmill. Exercise doesn't have to mean running on a treadmill for 30 minutes a day gazing at an empty wall. Spice up your routine with dance classes, kickboxing, a run in central park or perhaps a bike ride on the new Citi bikes for rent in the city. Taking exercise classes like kickboxing or zumba is a great way to stay motivated and do cardio for a full hour. Also, these types of classes usually have a weekly schedule, so you can book classes in your calendar. 

5. Set realistic goals. One of my many downfalls of incorporating exercise in my daily routine is my binge dieting and exercising. I'll go weeks without working out and to make up for it will go every day and only eat fruits and vegetables. Obviously you'll see results quickly, but this isn't sustainable. The only way to create an exercise routine that will really stick is to set realistic goals such as: going to the gym three times a week, doing sit ups every other morning or cutting out that afternoon iced coffee with milk & sugar. Taking small steps with realistic goals is the best way to see lasting results.

Of course it's easy to say what needs to be done but the hard part is to actually do it. Well, I know what I need to do, I'm saying it and now I'm going to do it. You can too!
